Roundtable Discussions
The Miami County Safety Council gathered for their annual roundtable discussion at “A Learning Place” for their December 12 meeting. This year’s roundtable discussions focused on: stress relief in the workplace, effective training and education, and positive safety culture.
The members took time to share their ideas, current practices, and held some great conversations covering the three topics. The collaborated responses are posted on our website, under the Safety Council tab. The Safety Council also sponsored three families through the Piqua Salvation Army for the holidays.
The Safety Council offers many great topics, speakers, networking opportunities and sometimes rebates. They meet on the 2nd Thursday every month. Memberships applications and additional information can be found on the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce website. This month’s meeting will be Thursday, Jan. 9, 12:00 noon – 1:30pm with guest speaker Marianna Patton, Customized Training Coordinator, Upper Valley Career Center Adult Division on the topic “Cold Weather Cautions”.

The Miami County Safety Council November Meeting
The Miami County Safety Council welcomed one of it’s greatest resources Bob Heater, Safety 4U, LLC., as presenter during the November 14 meeting, “Intro to OSHA – OSHA’s Inspection Procedures”. Mr. Heater spoke about direction on the matter when OSHA inspections come to your business, advice on what and what not to do and great insight on rudimentary questions. You can take a second look at his presentation and handouts, “OSHA’s Top 10 Violations for 2019” and “The Scary 13”. Thank you to all our members and non-members who joined us and donated food items to Council on Rural Services Miami County Achievement Center for Education Success teenagers. Thank you to Jeff Vaughn, ACES manager, for providing an overview of all the hard work that they do for the community’s students.

Read more about our October 2019 Safety Council Meeting
October is National Fire Prevention Month and during the October 10th Miami County Safety Council meeting fire prevention was the topic. The Miami County Safety Council was grateful when Assistant Fire Chief Lee Adams with the Piqua Fire department accepted the invitation to speak to the members about “Fire Extinguishers – Class, Types and Uses”. Assistant Chief Adams first lead a presentation about seven different extinguishers, explained what they contained and which ones could be used with what fires. This was a great presentation as we have many participating businesses that work with many different materials. Assistant Chief Adams then led the members outside for a live demonstration. This gave a chance for anyone who has not used an extinguisher to handle one, how the different extinguishers work on different fires and to practice the pull, aim, squeeze, sweep (P.A.S.S) method.
Next month’s meeting will be on Thursday, November 14, 2019 from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm at Romer’s @ A Learning Place, 201 RM Davis Parkway, Piqua, Ohio. We will learn about the “Intro to OSHA – OSHA’s Inspection Procedures” from Bob Heater, Safety 4U, LLC. November is our giving and goodwill month. Our members can bring up to two additional guests to the November meeting, at the price of two can goods. This is a great time to invite the CEO and get their attendee requirement completed if you are eligible for a safety rebate.
We will be collecting shelf-stable food for the Council on Rural Services Miami County Achievement Center for Educational Success teenagers during the November meeting. Some examples of items they are looking for are granola bars, healthy soups, instant oatmeal, bottles of water, shelf-stable milk, and juices are also good.
To RSVP, go to this page for the current monthly meeting. If you register before Monday of that week’s meeting you will be entered into a gift card drawing.
Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.
