The Miami County Safety Council March Meeting
The Miami County Safety Council held their safety meeting on March 12 with Josh Childers presenting.
Josh Childers works for Konecranes Inc. as their Field Operative Development Manager in Springfield, OH. Josh gave a wonderful presentation on crane safety that lead a strong argument as to why continuous training and training often are important.
74% of injuries are preventable and this is directly affected by operator training. Josh’s company offers training and advanced technology training with cranes. They also offer virtual reality training that has allowed the employees to practice and make mistakes without the cost to the company or injury, a great thing.
Unfortunately, we will not hold the April Safety Council meeting due to the new public restrictions. We thank you for your understanding and hope everyone follows the new protocols to keep the masses safe.

The Miami County Safety Council February Meeting
Following this month’s presentation on “911 At Your Service” by Jeff Busch, Director of the Miami County Communication Center, the Safety Council would like to say thank you to all the women and men who work at the 911 communication center and for everything that they do for our community.
When learning about all the Miami County calls that come into the Communication Center and how many fire units, EMS, volunteer firefighters, police, and sheriff personnel are dispatched you start to understand the importance of receiving clear information and the relaying of that information. When calling into the 911 call center stay focused, know where you are and why you are calling. It helps to regularly review your company’s emergency protocol just in case there is an emergency.
This month’s meeting will be Thursday, March 12, from 12:00 noon – 1:30pm with guest presenter Josh Childers, Konecranes, Inc. Field Operative Development Manager, on the topic of “Overhead Crane Safety: Why it Matters”. Members can RSVP on the Piqua Chamber’s website.
The 2020 Mills/Bogart Brothers Scholarship
The Mills Brothers began their career in 1925 as “Four Boys and a Guitar”. Their parents, John H. and Ethel M. Mills moved to Piqua in 1908-09. The “Four Boys” got their professional start with the local Greenamyer Orchestra. Their first record was cut in 1927 and during the next fifty years, the group cut over 1,246 records. The Mills Brothers biggest hits included “Tiger Rag”, “Glow Worm” and “Bye, Bye Blackbird”.
Similarly, the Bogart Brothers began their careers locally with their starring roles on the Lehman Catholic High School stage. They are the sons of Kathy and Bob Bogart of Houston, Ohio. Matt, Daniel and Dominic received the Mills Brothers Scholarship and have pursued careers in professional music performing in various roles on stage around the country. Kevin chose not to pursue a career in the arts. He plays guitar as a hobby and for various musical productions.
This scholarship(s) is intended to be presented to a resident in the City of Piqua who is currently a high school senior or currently attending an accredited college, music school or other post-high school institution. The student is required to have resided in the 45356 zip code upon high school graduation. Also, the student must show that he or she will or is pursuing music, music education or the performing arts field of study.

The deadline for application and letters of recommendation to be turned in to the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce, 326 N. Main Street, is 4:00pm on Friday, March 27, 2020.
